September 18, 2004: Spears marries dancer Kevin Federline one month ahead of schedule.
September 14, 2005 and September 12, 2006: Spears gives birth to her first son, Sean Preston Federline, and her second son, Jayden James Federline.

November 6, 2006: Spears files for divorce from Federline. The divorce is finalised in July 2007.
February 2007: Spears checks into rehab but leaves a day later on two separate occasions. In between, she shaves her head in a Los Angeles salon after the hair stylist refuses.
March-June 2007: Spears has several confrontational run-ins with paparazzi, including attacking one person’s car with an umbrella. She publicly apologises for the umbrella incident in July.
August 6, 2007: Spears gets in a minor accident with a parked car, but it leads to a months-long legal case because she doesn’t have a valid driving licence at the time.

August 2007: Los Angeles officials begin investigating reports that Spears is mistreating her young children. Federline works to gain full custody of Sean and Jayden.

January 3, 2008: Spears is forcibly admitted to a hospital in Los Angeles and placed on a 72-hour mental health hold after an argument about her children. A judge strips her of visitation rights the next day.
January 31, 2008: Spears is forcibly admitted to a Los Angeles hospital for the second time in a month.
February 1, 2008: A judge places Spears under a conservatorship with her father, Jamie, given control of her life.
January 2019: Spears cancels a Las Vegas residency and is ordered to go to rehab. She said her doctors and dad forced her to attend the programme amid accusations she wasn’t taking her medication, accusations she denies.
