Things might not be altogether stable in Hong Kong currently, but the city remains a focus for the luxury watch world with Panerai Officine making it the exclusive location for its worldwide launch of three new Luminor Luna Rossa models.

Most watch aficionados will know that Panerai has a traditional association with the sea and the Italian navy. Not surprisingly, it is an official sponsor and the official watch of Luna Rossa AC75, the Challenger of Record for the 36th America’s Cup, to be held in New Zealand in March, 2021.

The three models being launched are a salute to this challenge: Luminor Luna Rossa Regatta 47mm, Luminor Rossa Chrono Flyback 44mm and Luminor Luna Rossa GMT 44mm. Their design, in terms of technology and materials, functions, and even colour scheme, is inspired by the great race.

All three are black, with grey and red highlights, a palette that echoes the Italian team’s colours. Constituent materials such as Carbotech were chosen, according to Panerai, for “lightness, sturdiness and resistance to stress and corrosion”. Even the sail material has been used as a covering for the dial, which is marked with Luna Rossa Challenger 36th America’s Cup.

The auto-winding movements with three-day power reserve emanate from the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel. The 47mm Luminor Luna Rossa Regatta is powered by P.9100/R, equipped with the Regatta pre-start countdown and a knots scale on the flange.

Both P.9100/R and the P.9100 movement in the 44mm Luminor Luna Rossa Chrono Flyback in black ceramic have flyback chronograph function.

Luminor Luna Rossa GMT, also 44mm in black titanium, is powered by the mechanically sophisticated P.9010/GMT movement with indication of a second time zone – which can be set to Auckland time during the race period.

The Luna Rossa logo, the yacht and “America’s Cup” are engraved on the casebacks of each model. A limited number of the specially boxed and certified models can be seen at Panerai’s Canton Road Flagship Store and Harbour City Concept Store.
