It's all in the name for Cash

Remarkably, Asmussen and Boutin have already registered glorious victories in the French 2,000 Guineas, French 1,000 Guineas with Madeleine's Dream and the French Derby with Hernando. Boutin, who has been gravely ill with cancer, will be relying on his wife Lucy's filly Accommodating.

There is no more confident jockey in post-race interviews than Asmussen, who takes questions - and provides rapid-fire answers - in both French and English, often answering in both languages for the ease of reporters.

Frequently, if the right question has not been asked, in Cash's view, he will ask it himself and then provide a detailed reply.

No PR men are needed when this Texan is around, and there are few as competent and accomplished in the saddle in France these days or anywhere else for that matter. His prowess on Parisian tracks is now bordering on the legendary.

Gerald Mosse, who has been back on native soil for a week, is to partner the 10-1 chance Shemaka, a filly trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre for the Aga Khan.

So far, Shemaka has raced four times for two wins at the back end of last season - and returned to the racecourse with a fifth on her sole outing this season.

Mosse appears to have slipped back into the groove of French racing very quickly since his shock split with Patrick Biancone.

For instance, he has been snapped up by Arc-winning trainer John Hammond to partner Gothland in the Prix du Chemin de Fer du Nord on the same card.

Favourite for the French Oaks is Baya, who was slightly disappointing on her previous outing but a filly of obvious ability. She is prepared by Andre Fabre who will be bidding to complete and English-french Oaks double having scored at Epsom with Intrepidity under Michael Roberts last Saturday.

This week, starting on Tuesday, Flat racing's most glittering fixture is staged and taking pride of place will be the Fabre-trained Zafonic who will be reappearing for the first time since his record-breaking triumph in the English 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket.

The form lines surrounding that race appear strong, with Barathea progressing to win the Irish 2,000 Guineas after running second to Zafonic at Newmarket. He was then a good fifth in the Epsom Derby after failing to stay.

Zafonic will tackle the time-honoured St James's Palace Stakes, a Group One mile event for three-year-olds.

Meanwhile, the jumping season has been in recess for just over a week but welcome news received yesterday is that Richard Dunwoody, Britain's new champion jockey under National Hunt Rules has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Dunwoody, 29, said: ''I'm deeply honoured but a little bit surprised to receive this award.'' He joins John Francome and Peter Scudamore, two former champions, to have been awarded the MBE.
