Hong Kong police officers cheat death as metre-long iron bar spears windscreen on West Kowloon Highway

Two police officers escaped serious injury on Friday when a metre-long iron bar flew up from a motorway and speared the windscreen of their moving vehicle.

The accident occurred as a plain-clothes constable and an inspector were travelling in an unmarked police car along West Kowloon Highway toward Tsim Sha Tsui at 9.11am.

A police spokesman said the iron bar was believed to have been run over by a truck, causing it to fly off the road and pierce the unmarked vehicle as it approached Nam Cheong MTR station.

The bar speared the front windscreen and narrowly missing the constable at the wheel and the inspector who was in the passenger seat.

According to police, the constable’s hand was injured by glass fragments and he was taken to Caritas Medical Centre for treatment. The inspector had no injuries.

Officers from the Kowloon West traffic investigation unit were assigned to look into the accident.

The slow lane of the Tsim Sha Shui-bound motorway was closed for more than an hour until the damaged police vehicle was towed away.

The two officers attached to the New Territories North regional crime unit were on the way to the police headquarters in Wan Chai to attend a meeting.
